HOW TO CLEAN YOUR MATTRESS EFFECTIVELY

Cleaning a mattress isn't exactly something you look forward to, but regular cleaning is essential to prevent it becoming a breeding ground for dust and stains. So here's a simple guide to giving your mattress a makeover.

1. GATHER YOUR CLEANING ARSENAL

There's no need to embark on an epic quest to find these tools:

- Hoover (with fabric nozzle, or at worst the nozzle that's been lying around in the cupboard since 2005)

- Baking soda (an everyday hero)

- White vinegar (because it multitasks)

- Natural disinfectant spray

- A few clean rags (or towels if you're short of rags)

- Warm water

2. VACUUM THE MATTRESS

Start by clearing the battlefield by removing all the bedding. Then vacuum the entire surface of the mattress to remove dust, dead skin (yes, sorry to remind you) and debris. Be careful: corners and seams are often dust mite breeding grounds, so be thorough.

3. DEAL WITH THE TASKS

Here's the easy way to clean:

- Light stains: Make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and a little water. Apply generously to the stain, leave for 30 minutes (now's the time to watch an episode of your favourite TV series), then wipe with a damp cloth.

- Stubborn stains: Mix equal parts white vinegar and lukewarm water, spray directly onto the stain and let the chemistry work for a few minutes. Then wipe with a dry cloth. Finish with a touch of bicarbonate to neutralise odours.

4. DISINFECT THE MATTRESS

To eliminate bacteria and dust mites, a quick spritz of natural disinfectant spray all over the mattress will do wonders. Make sure the product is suitable for the fabric.  Leave to air dry before putting your bedding back on.

5. SAY GOODBYE TO UNPLEASANT ODOURS

Baking soda, that discreet superhero, is also ideal for absorbing unpleasant odours. Sprinkle it generously on your mattress and leave it to work for a few hours, or even better, overnight. Then vacuum up the powder residue and enjoy a fresher mattress than ever.

6. VENTILATE THE MATTRESS

Ventilation is crucial to keeping your mattress fresh. After cleaning, leave it to breathe for a few hours, ideally near an open window or in a well-ventilated room.

7. PROTECT YOUR MATTRESS

Once your mattress is all clean, consider investing in a protective cover. An anti-mite or waterproof cover is an excellent way of avoiding future cleaning incidents.

REGULAR MAINTENANCE TIPS

  • Vacuum the mattress: Once a month is enough to prevent it becoming a dustbath.

  • Turn and rotate: Turn your mattress every three to six months to prevent it from sagging.

  • Use a mattress protector: It makes life easier by reducing exposure to allergens, and it's a great excuse to procrastinate on the big mattress cleaning.

  • With these tips, you can say goodbye to dust mites and other annoyances, and get your mattress back to as good as new!
