Choosing the right bedding: sizes and best practices for a perfect bed set
Quality bedding is not just about selecting the right materials but also about choosing the correct sizes and adopting good care practices.
1. Bed set: choosing the right sizes
A typical bed set includes a duvet cover, pillowcases, and a fitted sheet.
• Duvet cover: For a single bed (90x190 cm), opt for a 140x200 cm cover. For a double bed (140x190 cm), a 200x200 cm or 220x240 cm cover gives more coverage. If you have a queen (160x200 cm) or king size (180x200 cm) bed, a 240x260 cm cover is ideal.
• Pillowcases: Available in two main sizes: 50x70 cm (rectangular) or 65x65 cm (square). Choose the size that matches your pillows.
• Fitted sheet: Ensure your fitted sheet matches the size of your mattress, considering its thickness and ensuring the sheet’s pocket depth fits well. For a 140x190 cm mattress, a 140x200 cm sheet with a 30 cm pocket is recommended. For larger beds, choose a 160x200 cm or 180x200 cm sheet with a deep pocket for a snug fit.
2. Pillow and pillowcase: how to pair them
• Pillows: A good pillow should keep your head in a neutral position, neither too high nor too low. Back sleepers should go for medium-density pillows, while side sleepers might prefer thicker pillows for better neck support.
• Pillowcases: In addition to size, consider choosing pillowcases that match your bed set or complement it with contrasting colors. To maintain hygiene, wash your pillowcases weekly to avoid bacteria buildup.
3. Flat sheet and fitted sheet: for tailored comfort
• Flat sheet: Though not always used, a flat sheet can add an extra layer between you and the duvet, especially in summer. Make sure it is wide enough to tuck under the mattress. For example, for a double bed (140x190 cm), a 240x300 cm flat sheet provides ample tuck-in space.
• Fitted sheet: A well-fitted sheet stays in place throughout the night, even if you tend to move around. For optimal fit, select a fitted sheet with a pocket deep enough to fully cover the mattress.
4. Duvet and duvet cover: the perfect pairing
• Duvet: For cold winter nights or if you tend to feel chilly, a duvet is a great choice. It’s often lighter than a comforter but still provides extra warmth. Make sure your duvet is slightly larger than the bed for maximum comfort (e.g., a 220x240 cm duvet for a double bed).
• Duvet cover: To protect your duvet and make it easier to clean, a duvet cover is essential. As with the duvet, ensure the cover is slightly bigger to prevent the duvet from bunching inside.
5. Sleep mask: for uninterrupted rest
A sleep mask is a practical accessory to improve sleep quality, especially if you're sensitive to light. Opt for a mask made from soft, breathable materials like organic cotton, which is gentle on the skin.
Best practices for maintaining your bedding
• Air your bed regularly to prevent moisture and dust mites. Leave it open for at least 20 minutes every morning before making the bed.
• Wash your sheets every one to two weeks, and your pillowcases weekly, especially if you have sensitive skin or are prone to allergies.
• Use mattress and pillow protectors to extend the life of your bedding.
• Rotate your mattress regularly to avoid sagging and ensure even support
